Stephen Tootle was a fixture in the 1990's music scene in Visalia. He was a conservative Republican with a punk rock ethos and a deep hunger to play music. A Golden West High School graduate, he says the music community welcomed him with open arms and allowed him — a youngster who would likely be a castoff in music-rich communities like San Francisco and L.A. — to play a part in Visalia's skateboard-driven creative community. He played in bands like Violet Green (Or Violent Green, he can't remember. He was kicked out for not growing his hair our or smoking weed) and Happy Death Men. Now a history professor at Visalia's College of the Sequoias, Tootle says he hopes the youth in Visalia pay attention to the history of Visalia's music community. Music by: Wakeblooms

Visalia Charter Independent Study (VCIS) is a high school with an interesting new take on independent study. The key, says Principal Mrs. Heather Rocha, is their blended learning approach, supporting the flexible schedule of independent study with classroom learning in certain subjects. However, the classes meet only once or twice per week, providing more of a college atmosphere to the school. Master teachers that meet with each student once per week are another essential component to the students' success.
